Wreckfest was made by the Bugbear Entertainment team, responsible for the first two installments of the FlatOut series, which are considered its best releases. This racing game is the spiritual successor of FlatOut, which is manifested in the unique system of total destruction of cars, and in the variety of modes, and in the atmosphere of the reckless survival racing show that permeates the entire game.
Unlike, for example, Formula 1 racing, where collisions are punished with fines, Wreckfest encourages close contacts on the race track, and even gives out tasks in which the player is required to turn rivals, cause an accident, or even completely disable an opponent's car. Therefore, already at the start of the race, a small dump often forms here, and not everyone reaches the finish line.
At the same time, the list of activities is not limited to ring races: derby fans will be satisfied, because the game has a lot of sites where you can gouge other people's cars and try to save your bucket of nuts.
Yes, and ring races constantly present surprises: either they will put you in a small car and make you race with bulky buses, or on the contrary, they will transfer you to a bus in a race against mini-cars, or they will offer you to participate in a lawn mower derby, or something else. The only thing missing is the mini-games that made FlatOut popular, in which you need to mock the body of the unfortunate racer in every possible way, but even without them there is enough entertainment.
And although in recent years there have been many races in the spirit of FlatOut, Wreckfest has become the closest to the great series.
The game went into early access in 2014, and got to the release in 2018. But her story did not end there: the developers continued to release add-ons, developing the title according to the season system. And by 2022, all DLC for Wreckfest came out, so now you can buy the game with a full set of content.
There is a lot to shell out here: the add-ons include additional cars and many items for customizing them, including exclusive decorations that will help you stand out on the race track. Have you always dreamed of riding in a village toilet with a steering wheel and wheels, or on a huge pig machine? Wreckfest provides such an opportunity.
An impressive set of parts for upgrading and customizing cars is added to the huge fleet of vehicles in the game. Digging in the garage is interesting: there are a lot of details, and each one improves or worsens some of the characteristics of the car.
For example, armor elements negatively affect the acceleration and maximum speed of the car. But you can’t do without them at all - opponents act aggressively, and the player himself, through negligence, can be imprinted in some tree and critically damage the critical nodes of his sod: do not forget that Wreckfest uses a realistic damage model, and any accident can be fatal for auto.
So you have to find a balance between speed, handling and durability of the car, combining different parts. Before the race itself, you can additionally carry out tuning by adjusting the suspension, gear ratio, differential and brake balance of the car, which directly affects its behavior on the track.
In addition, there is also styling - external customization, which will help make the car unique. From bumpers and spoilers to unique features like a huge buzz saw in the roof or even a coffin in place of the back seat, the game will allow you to reflect the character of your racing equipment.
Any racing game becomes more interesting if it has multiplayer support. Wreckfest is no exception - even though it’s fun to drive with bots, they can’t be compared with live players who can follow completely different goals: someone rushes to victory, someone shamelessly stupid, flying off the track over and over again, and someone wants to have fun, jostle with rivals and spoil their lives in every possible way.
Finding opponents for matches is not a problem: at any time of the day, several servers with live players are available in the game. Wreckfest also supports LAN matchmaking and granular customization of your own servers. There is no need to complain about the network code - the ping is comfortable, there are no gaps.
Finally, another reason to play Wreckfest is mod support. The game is integrated with the Steam Workshop, which is full of mods for every taste.
The most popular, of course, are car mods. There are a lot of them: you can add Ken Block's legendary HOONIGAN V1, a Lada-2108 or a car from Mad Max to your garage, and also replace the standard liveries with something more interesting.
There are other modifications as well. How about a rainbow track from Mario Kart 64? Reworked physical model? More varied weather effects? Or maybe replacing all the rivals with Simpsons characters?
Mods can extend the life of any game, especially if the developers implement their official support. In the case of Wreckfest, this statement works 100%, and thanks to the modifications, the title does not get bored even after completing a career and a couple of dozen online races.
In addition, Wreckfest is available on all platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S and Nintendo Switch, is undemanding to the resources of the gaming platform and looks great.
